We recently preformed a gate repair for a rusted old gate in Worthing. The gate posts were rusted through leaving jagged edges and the gate itself was falling apart.
Sometimes it’s possible to replace a post or sand back and repaint rusted metal work. In this case the gate had rusted through in multiple places meaning a gate repair would be more expensive than a replacement.

When attempting a gate repair like this, the first job is to inspect the iron gate for damage/strength to determine whether you can repair the gate or need to replace it. The posts may have come loose for example.
For this job, we removed the gate from the hinges. Once the fate was removed we used a stone cutter to make neat cuts in the pathway concrete. This ensures that the path would not get damaged and cracked when we dug out the post.

Once the holes are cut the digging begins. When digging near a pavement and a garden path, it’s important to take your time and be careful not to cause damage.
Using various tools including an SDS and post hole digger it’s possible to excavate around an old post.

Once the gate posts are removed it’s important to ensure the holes are deep enough to support the new posts. In this case we went for longer, slimmer gate posts. For this this gate repair we had to dig down another 200mm to get to the correct depth to ensure a stable gate.
Once the correct depth was achieved we prepped the concrete and filled the post holes. The posts are placed and levelled one at a time, taking time to ensure the gate post was perfectly vertical. We do this using magnetic spirit levels and a laser level.

The concrete mix used for the posts is different to the concrete used to repair the path. As such, we leave 4 inches or so about the post concrete mix in order to ‘top off’ and repair the path once the post has been set level.
It’s important to ensure the fittings for the gate are high enough from the path to ensure good clearance to allow for movement and debris build up on the path.
Once the posts are set and the path repaired, the hard work is done. Fitting the gate is simply a case of sliding the fate over the hinge bolts and then tightening the nuts to ensure the gate closes properly.
