What jet washing products do we use?

There are a number of great products that we use to ensure a long lasting finish when power washing your patio or driveway. They come in several categories, used at different stages of the job and not always used to clean every or wash every driveway. It depends on the condition if your slabs / bricks / concrete.

The main categories for products that we use to jet wash your driveway or patio include;

• Patio pointing grout & resin
• Mortar for re-setting patio slabs
• Weed killers for driveways and patios

It’s important to use the right chemicals for the job. We always aim to use chemicals that are friendly on the environment and your plants.

Cleaning products & anti-algae for patios and driveways

Our preferred go-to is Hypochlorite which is commonly used in agriculture to wash out the dairy cow shed. This product treats algae and staining but doesn’t damage nearby plants.

This works quickly to remove all the algae and dirt to ensure that when the power washer is applied we get the most value out of the water being used to prevent waste. This also helps prevent the return of algae and dirt.

Driveway and patio sealers

Sealing patios and driveways is a good way to improve the colour of an older installation and add a layer of protection from the weather, UV and wear and tear. There are a number of products that we use depending on availability and price at the time;

Firstly we remove weeds from the patio and jetwash the patio to remove dirt. If we’re in good weather and the patio drys quickly we will apply the sealer on the same day, if however, it’s rainy weather then we’ll book you in for a return visit on a better day.

The products are similar in application and come in a liquid form. We prefer to pour the sealer onto the patio slabs or driveway and then use a paint roller to spread it over evenly. This ensures a good finish and even distribution.

Patio sealer typically dries in a couple of hours or less but it’s best to stay off it for a couple of days in our experience.

If you’re booked in for a clean and seal and the weather turns, we’ll keep checking for good weather windows and return to finish the job and it won’t cost you any extra even if we have to return more than once.

Patio pointing grout & resin

Patio and block paving pointing is one of the most important steps when installing a patio and it’s one of the steps most often done poorly.

When grout is now properly pressed into the gaps between patio slabs, even the most expensive resin products will fail after just a few years.

Re-pointing a patio can take time as removing the old grout can be a difficult task and has to be done carefully. It is sometimes possible to repair the grout if the majority of the grout is still good.

There are a number of products widely used for re-pointing patios and driveways ranging from modern resins, pre-mixed grouting mortar and traditional sand and cement.

My favorite is a dry sand and cement mix as it’s quick to install on a dry day. This doesn’t tend to last as long as the other options though with the modern resins being the best for longevity but it takes longer to install these to a high standard and it’s really important to pack the joints with resin which takes time. All too often professionals will simply sweep the product over and call it a day. For a few months it will look good until it doesn’t.

Our preferred product is Silka patio grouting resin which includes fine grains mixed with resin which sets after installing over 1-2 days (when it’s fry), 2-5 days when it’s wet. The benefit of this product is that you can choose your preferred colour and it can be applied in the wet which is handy living in blighty.

Weed killers for driveway and patios

Weed killer is not something that we will apply to your patio or driveway by default. We will ask you if this is something that you want doing. Some customers will provide us with the product that they use and we’ll spray it down carefully for them, others don’t want it used at all.

There can be scenarios where weed killer is a good choice, especially if there are significant amounts of nuisance weed such as bind weed.

Our preferred method of removing weeds from patios and driveways is to either dig as much of the roots up as possible then apply the area with chemicals or for established infestations, we can bag up the leaves and spray the weed killer into the bags.

This is weather dependent and can’t be done in the rain.

As an aside, with a thorough job done on removing weeds and most importantly growing medium (soil) from between patio slabs, followed by jet washing the driveway or patio, a through job pointing followed by a good patio / driveway sealer, the chances of weeds coming back is already greatly reduced.
